We have just been joined by seven men from the Valencia area for a weekend retreat of meditation, puja and socializing. One of those visiting is Devaraja an old friend who I have not seen for at least twenty years. He left the Brighton Center in the mid 1980’s to work in the film and TV industry as a designer and artistic director. He has now abandoned that life – become an anagarika – and hopes to live a simple quiet life, perhaps in a community. He used to paint images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and wants to get back to his painting. The image of Avalokitesvara above was painted by Devaraja in the early 1970’s. He says his style is less traditional these days.
