Worcester and Birmingham Canal – September 2016

A few days ago I moored near the University in Birmingham and my friend Sagaramati visited me on the boat, then I headed south on the Birmingham and Worcester Canal through the 2.5km Wast Hills Tunnel which is by far the longest I’ve navigated. (There is a Youtube video of someone else going through the tunnel here). The day after negotiating the tunnels I took nine exhausting hours to descend the 33 locks of the Tardebigge/Stoke flight. It was hard work especially doing it alone – and it was raining.
The Worcester and Birmingham canal and the Stratford Canal both wind through pretty English countryside and they are both narrow canals with narrow locks. The pictures show how different canals can be. The Gloucester and Sharpness is a wide canal with big locks
