I drove to Adhisthana, near Ledbury to meet some friends and leave my car in the barn and then took the train back to Gloucester. It was a cold evening and I didn’t even warm up on the train. The ride – I had my bike – from the train station to the boat was also icy cold and all I had to look forward to was a cold boat. I felt a bit miserable. But as I rode through Gloucester city centre, past the lighted shop windows, Christmas decorations, and drunks tumbling out of pubs I passed at least twenty men and women sleeping on the streets or talking in groups of two or three. Where would they go to get the cold out of their bones? I had a boat and I was on it by choice – no room for complaint or self pity.
