I was relieved that it was warmer today – the lift bridge hydraulics worked fine – so I moved on. No locks on this stretch of canal but several very tedious lift bridges – they are operated from the inaccessible side of the canal – fine if you aren’t alone but involving tricky maneuvers and clambering along the side of a slippery snow covered boat if you have no crew. But as ever one begins to develop a technique. The country is very pleasant and in the afternoon the clouds cleared and I enjoyed the bright blue sky, the scattering of remaining snow and the dark naked trees. I cruised slowly past Taraloka our long established women’s Buddhist retreat centre.
