In 2009 My father and I took a three week cruise down the Red Sea from Jordan to Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Oman and India. I both enjoyed the visits but also felt very uncomfortable about the difference in the wealth of we tourists and the local people. Egypt was tense with military check points every few miles and we had a military guard crossing the desert from the sea to the Nile valley. The poverty in Sudan and Eritrea was disturbing – especially when compared to the relative prosperity in Oman. We flew back to the UK from Bombay. Passing through the Gulf of Aden we joined a convoy, protected by gunships from Somalian Pirates. The following year the same cruise was attacked by pirates who failed to board the ship.
